Four hardy souls joined leader Derek at the head of Bassenthwaite Lake for this energetic expedition both up and around Skiddaw. Luckily the weather was kinder than the previous day with its severe gales and hail showers. Even so the summit of Skiddaw was not the most tranquil of places!
It was a walk of three halves !! – the first being a boggy and muddy stroll along the lakeside to Mire House. This was followed by a strenuous ascent of Carl Side and mighty Skiddaw then descending for lunch by Whit Beck. The third half saw loins girded for the long traverse under Lonscale Fell to Skiddaw House then past Dash Falls returning to the cars after 8 hours and 20 miles via Bassenthwaite village as darkness fell.
