Devon Dumpling 2024

Devon Dumpling 2024

28th April 2024

THE DEVONSHIRE DUMPLING RESTAURANT will be open for one day on the 28th April  and will serving three courses.

1) The Light Bite

9.4 miles. Heads straight for the cliff path, goes to Lime Kilns car park, turns right at the White Bridge and left near Brandy Head and reaches Otterton via minor roads. This walk is self-supporting and will not involve checkpoints. There are opportunities to eat and drink and tarry a little at the Kings Arms and Otterton Mill. It is hoped to return by the side of the Otter and then to use a new footpath created by the Lower Otter Restoration Project.

Watch this space- after weeks of rain the footpath has been closed (just) on the Otterton side of the Clamour Bridge.

This dish should satisfy the lighter appetite without inducing indigestion. Tea/coffee before and afterwards, certificate and pasty for £6. What's not to like?

2)  The Main Course

18.9 miles. This is the restaurant's most popular offering and has been the choice of 50% of  reservations thus far.

It leaves the hall and goes to Shortwood Common, heads via Hayeswood Lane to Yettington and Woodbury Castle. (CP 1 ).  It then continues through Woodbury and Exton to join the walkway to Exmouth. CP 2 is still to be confirmed. Then, Via Phear Park and a little urban walking it will reach the Coastal Path from Gore Lane and follow the cliffs back to Budleigh .

Again this footpath is closed at present with South West Water stating that work should be finished by 'mid-March'.

This walk involves coastal, pebblebed heath, estuary and urban walking. It should satisfy all but the most gargantuan of appetites.

3)  Main Course plus Dessert

At present just short of 30 miles

A route for the dedicated gourmand. It will satisfy even the most voracious of appetites. In brief-; to Shortwood Common, Kersbrook, White Bridge, Brandy Head, Colliver Cross, Clamour Bridge, Otterton, East Budleigh, Hayeswood Lane, Yettington, Woodbury; following the same route as the 18 until West Down Beacon when it turns left to cross East Devon Golf course to return to the hall via Castle and Bear Lanes. It is, truly, for walkers and runners, with established , substantial eating habits.

Further details and full route descriptions/ GPX  will be on this website shortly after the closure of entries date- 15th April

Over the last three months East Devon has been wetter than I have ever known it. Consequently, there have been issues with all three routes.

The 9.4 mile route. The footpath has been closed  for weeks just to the Otterton side of the Clamour Bridge which prevented using the path by the Otter back to Budleigh. The Otter had cut a channel over into farmland which was too deep to cross.  It re-opened last week.

The 18 route- a large hole appeared in the path on the 'down' side of Woodbury Castle. The footpath has been closed for its repair. work was to have been finished by 15.4. I need to check that.

The 30 route- there is a tree down just after Colliver Cross. A case of 'under or over'. 'Under' was tricky given deep mud.

The sea wall is being repaired at Exmouth so we have come down the Promenade via Marine Drive only.

I am hoping this drier spell continues. I will put some Final Joining Instructions on si entries.
