Twelve of us met at Anne's house and enjoyed coffee, mince pies and other refreshments - many thanks Anne. Then out to take in a circuit of the Saddleworth area.  Heading south initially to Brushes and Staylbridge Country Park before turning north-east to take a break at Chew Reservoir.  Down to Dovestones and lunch at Binn Green.  Up to Pots and Pans, down to the canal and return along the canal through Uppermill.

Brighouse Brass

A muddy field

 
 

There were 11 persons on the walk and we used several walk paths starting with the Calderdale Way and Brighouse Boundary walk to Norwood Green. Across Wyke to Oakenshaw passing a column mounted sundial (no sun no time). Under the M62 to Hunsworth and along the Spen Valley Heritage Trail passing Cleckheaton to Rawfolds. Then on the Luddite Trail to Hightown where the Bronte family resided for a spell. Bronte Way was used and also Brighouse Boundary again then Kirklees Way enabled us to reach the A644 (Dewsbury road) and onto the A62 (Huddersfield road). After the Kirklees Cut canal we crossed Bradley Park, still on the Kirklees Way, over the M62 for the 3rd and final time. We passed through the Bradley Wood scout camp back on the Brighouse Boundary walk to Woodhouse and then onward to Brighouse after 19 miles.

Refreshment was taken at a local canal side micro pub. Walk participants brought along seasonal goodies which were readily consumed with much gusto and appreciation.

Thanks to all for your support and for coping with the horrific muddy conditions along the way. Your perseverance and good humour enabled us to get through the day.

Eleven on the walk today, three from West York’s and eight SP.  A typical Norman led walk, plenty of urban, brisk and enough mud to wallow the day by.  Kept mostly fine and a wonderful supply of goodies, especially at the end over a drink courtesy of Jeff’s Mum.

Fourteen on this excellent route and very ably led by Jane, around the surprisingly attractive surroundings of Barnsley.
Visiting countryside, a country park and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.  A day for short stops, very cold but nice with it.  Pendle Pete.

Eight of us took in an excellent circuit of the Calderdale area, starting and finishing at the Fox and Goose.  Temperatures were around freezing and felt cooler in the sometimes brisk wind.

Twixt Sabden & Harwood

A farmer with a sense of humour. 

 

A delayed start of 25 minutes today, due to three of our group missing the meeting point.  But it was worth the wait and a group of five consisting of, the ever reliable Storming Norman, Peter the Pirate from Mill Bank, Clare & Nick from Cowpe and Pendle Pete. I have to say as leader for the day, how impressed I was with the turnout, commitment and cooperation of everyone taking part! 
 
The conditions where Bad, with persistent rain all day and getting purchase underfoot at times was difficult but I realised a strong group had formed and was able to push the pace.  Not a day for hanging about admiring views, keeping warm and dry as possible with just a morning break and a lunch stop, was the order of the day.  
 
From Black Hill CP, we where straight onto the highest hill of the day, the trig of the same, through one of a number of nice mixed woods visited and down into Sabden Valley. Through fields along the valley to Read Old Bridge, onto the track for Read Hall and down below to the Lancashire Calder at Cock Bridge. Joining the path by the river towards Whalley for a mile, left at the footbridge to the top of Berry’s Lane and our morning hot drink in the barn at Lower White Carr.
Refreshed, we squelched our way ironically to Sunny Bank and down to Dean Clough Res’ up to the road at the top of Boston Plantation and over the moorland path to Parsonage Res’.
Along the road and around the res’ to the best mud of the day, through the fields to Middle Mickle Hey and down to the L&L Canal by Whitebirk Industrial Estate near Blackburn.
 
Two miles along the towpath now opposite Rishton, picking up on the old railway trackbed, (Great Harwood Loop, Padiham - Blackburn Line) it was along here we had our lunch stop, then passing through the back of Harwood town to Mill Lane.
Following the trackbed again through birch trees to Martholme Viaduct and retracing our steps back to Read Park, due to the viaduct closure. Out of Read Park grounds now and along Whin’s Lane above the village of Read for a mile and into soggy fields again through to Sabden Lane near Law Farm. Across the lane into the grounds of the Huntroyde Estate, making our way up through another fine wood to Priddy Bank and the final slog up to the car park at Black Hill.
 
Considering we finished the walk by 3.20pm in those conditions, 20m in 6hours 25minutes is not shabby at all!

We gathered in the centre of Todmorden at Stansfield carpark (that is actually signed as Dalton Street carpark - sorry for any confusion).  A bright but cold start to the day as we headed out of the town on a route that was new to me and I hoped would be new to all of the others, alas this was not the case.  A stiff climb to Gaddins reservoir was followed by a path over to and joining the Pennine Way to Stoodly Pike.  Coffee was taken a little further down off Dick's Lane.  Through fields and woodland and down to the canal at Hebden Bridge.  

Climbing out of the valley the lovely wooded path to the outskirts of Heptonstall lead to and through Colden Clough.  Lunch was had before climbing out onto Heptonstall Moor and then to Hoof Stones Height dropping down to the road for another coffee stop. From Shore the Calderdale Way was followed back to a now tamed Todmorden.  Drinks were enjoyed at The Pub.

Water Day (What a day!)

 
There we were,fully rigged out in our best waterproofs to commence our walk in incessant rain which was forecast to ease off at 2pm.  Our route was adjusted prior to the start to take account of the weather.  A reccied  route of 23.5 miles became one which was just under 19miles.  We walked along the road to Holme to avoid anticipated flooding.  We passed a home built into a hill side, crossed the dam over Brownhill Reservoir and turned right below Ramsden Edge to Elbow End, along Snailsden Edge and around Winscar Reservior to Dumford Bridge where we had a break in a bus shelter out of the rain.
 
We then walked along the TPT, a disused rail line to Hazelhead where we left our planned route to walk along Wham Road (A616) to Victoria where we had our 2nd and last break in another welcoming bus shelter.  We continued along Ox Lee Lane to rejoin our planned route along the Holme Valley circular walk to Holmebridge and onto the finish.  Two of our number made their mileage up to 19miles by completing to laps of the carpark.

Six South Pennine walkes met at Marsden railway station at 8 45.  Our planned leader had an emergency to deal with and so Ian stepped into the breach and led a walk for us.  The weather was kind to us, the pace brisk.  Drinks were enjoyed post walk at the Riverhead pub and brewery.

After the coldest start of the autumn so far and before the tail end of hurricane Lorenzo the South Pennine group squeezed a walk in, on a cold but largely fair and dry day.  Start and finish was over the border at Slaithwaite.
