AGM Walk 2022

Led by Clare

Nine walkers met in Mungrisdale on a very blustery day. As it was so windy the decision was taken to avoid the high ground of Bowscale Fell (604 metres) and so the walk followed the minor road north to Mosedale where the original route was rejoined. A footpath led across fields and minor roads towards Hutton Roof (including a detour to avoid a fearsome looking bull), where a stop was made by the picnic table. Passing Scales farm the route headed South-East passing through Cow Snout Wood, where a multitude of fungi species were seen, to meet the road again by the entrance to Eycott Hill nature reserve. There were some benches there so an early lunch was taken.
Taking the (intermittently) waymarked trail through the reserve, the route made its way to Eycott Hill, at 345 metres (1131 ft) it is listed as a Birkett and was the day's high point. Across to Little Eycott Hill then a pathless descent SW to an enclosure to pick up the waymarked trail again. This was followed towards Redmire before heading South and passing Near Howe, Wilton Hill and then up to the gated road just South of Hazlehurst.
An easy direct return along the road to Mungrisdale would have been possible but there was planty of time so the footpath across the fields was taken instead. A large tree had fallen right onto the stile at the end of the first field, and negotiating this provided some light entertainment.
Mungrisdale was safely reached in good time for a change before drinks, a chat and the AGM at 4pm.
