Wythop Roundabout 11/09/2022

Led by Paul

Seven members of Cumbria LDWA met just off the A66 on the road to Wythop Mill, then walked up through the village towards our first hill of the day, Ling Fell.

Ling Fell

Taking the old Corpse Road up, the top was soon reached and views opened out towards the Solway Firth and the Scottish hills beyond, with Criffel prominent.

An easterly descent then led to Bladder Keld and a reasonably dry traverse of Wythop Moss before a steep climb to the second summit, Greystones and a lovely view over the Vale of Lorton.

Here morning refreshments were taken and the first of many other walkers encountered.

After an initial descent, an undulating ridge route was then followed firstly to Broom Fell with its fine cairn and wind-shelter, then on to Lords Seat, the highest point of the day at 552m.

A brief down then up then followed to lunch at the summit of Barf, our 5th peak, with a good view of Bassenthwaite Lake, Skiddaw, Keswick and the Helvellyn ridge.

A mainly pathless section along the ridge then followed before descending into Wythop Woods and a rest stop at the Walton memorial seat.

Climbing back up to the crest of the Wythop valley the route then climbed Sale Fell (the 6th and final Wainright of the day) before descending to Wythop Church.

After a brief stop to look inside, the group followed minor tracks and over the A66 towards Embleton before crossing back over the A66 to the cars.

Walk stats: 14 miles (22.5km) with 3000 ft (1000m) of ascent
