ASKHAM FELL CIRCUIT, 16th January 2022

Led by Trish

We arrived behind Rheged just as the sun was rising above the fells, bright red and beautiful. Ten of us set off down hill towards RedHills and the field track and paths to the footbridge over the River Eamont. Keeping to the left hand path we headed towards Yanwath Hall, a 14th century Pele tower, then into Yanwath by going under the railway line.

We followed the footpath into Tirril. From Tirril House to Askham we used an old lane with wide views all around of the fells and Pennines. In Askham we used the bus shelter for our coffee break, with a chance of a short sit down.

Then onto Askham Fell with its multitude of paths, we went to the Cockpit, and then into Pooley Bridge for lunch.

The Cockpit is a bronze age stone circle, it stands where two trading routes intersect, it may have been used as a meeting place at least 3500 years ago.

After lunch we followed the river toward Barton and its 12th century church

The walk was nearly finished, just along the footpath to Sockbridge and the I mile walk to the Mill. Then back to the footbridge across the Eamont, up the hill and back to where the cars were parked. The weather was very kind to us with no wind and warm sunshine for part of the day. All enjoyed the walk.
