COLD FELL TO CROSS FELL - 18.5.08

HAS ROGER LOST HIS MAP ?

A group of five members lead by Roger, and joined temporarily by a visitor and his dog, set off from Jockey Shield at 8.45am to climb Cold Fell – this being the first top on the long Pennine ridge. This was reached at 10.15 when a short break was had and some photos were taken for future blackmail purposes. The weather was fine and clear and we could easily see Cross Fell though looking North and East was less clear. Conditions underfoot were quite dry and good progress was made along the wire fence continuing over Great Blacklaw Hill, West Dun Hill and Three Pikes. Here we met two plane crash searchers who entertained us with gory details of bodies and plane wreckage found. From here we progressed to Tom Smith’s Stone and Black Fell arriving at Hartside café just before 3pm. After a short refreshment break the last leg beckoned as we were already behind schedule. The going along the ridge was easier underfoot as short grass replaced tough heather over Little Knapside Hill and Melmerby Fell. Cross Fell looked quite close but took much longer to reach and a cold strong wind made us pleased to reach the top. The descent to Blencarn was via Grumply Hill, which meant a very late finish at 8pm. Thanks to Barrie and Barbara for their hospitality at the end of a long day.
