TIME FOR TEA - MARK 9 - 22.9.13

TEA TIME

It’s hard to believe that there have already been eight of Paul’s ‘T4T’ walks and even harder to imagine that he could lead the way into new territory. But this is just what he did on a pleasantly warm but overcast day as eight members and three visitors left Brampton at the usual time of just after 8.30.

Some familiar ground was inevitable at the start on the way south via Gelt bridge and the pretty hamlet of Greenwell towards Castle Carrock. Wisely the fleshpots here were avoided as the adjoining reservoir was partially circumnavigated leading to a coffee stop on the fell overlooking both water and village. Then it was onwards to Jockey Shield above the River Gelt to regain the fell at the end of the tarmac.

A return was made under Tarnmonath Fell past the uninhabited Gairs to lunch on the sheltered flank of Simmerson Hill where some enjoyed a post prandial snooze in the heather. It was onwards then to Talkin Fell with its multitude of cairns and a short descent to regain quiet roads to Farlam and familiar Talkin Tarn. With the day’s work nearly done Brampton was regained via its station and the course of the old Dandy line railway.

It only remained to navigate the network of lanes and ginnels through the houses to arrive at our starting point and complete a satisfactory 20 miles. Little needs to be said about Mary’s cream teas and homemade jams apart from observing that they easily lived up to previous year’s standards and made the preparation of Sunday dinner superfluous!
