General Notes
The Herriot Way walk is a 52-mile, circular walk that runs through some of the best scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and visits many of the places associated with the fictional world-famous vet, James Herriot, based on the real life vet Alf Wight. The walk follows a walking holiday Alf Wight took with his son Jimmy. The Herriot Way visits beautiful valleys, high, open fells and rolling, heather-clad moorland. The route crosses one of the highest points in Yorkshire, visits historic monuments and passes through a barren industrial wilderness; laid bare through lead mining We will be walking it over 2 days although typically it is walked over four days, making this a strenuous weekend walk. Each day we will walk about 26 miles with about 4000ft of ascent. You'll be carrying your overnight kit as well as breakfast, lunch, snacks and adequate fluid. Proposed accommodation is: Friday night 10th July – Grinton Youth hostel (£15 - £20) -there is currently plenty of space available so please book your own accommodation Saturday night 11th July Hawes Youth Hostel – we have booked 3 private rooms with 11 beds. Please contact me at walks.northumbria@ldwa.org.uk if you would like to book a bed (cost £35 -£45). Camping and hotel accommodation are also available in Hawes . The number of walkers is limited to 20 so please contact me if you would like to attend this walking weekend
