Walk Details:

Event Type
Group Walk
Region / Area
Northern England / Richmondshire
Local Group
Northumbria
Distance
18ml.
Start Time
08.30
Route
The Angel Inn, Gilling West, DL10 5JW. GR: NZ183051 We have permission to park in the Village Hall car park (next to the pub) but it is small and will probably not hold all our cars. Other than that, there is off road and roadside parking in Gilling West village. Please park considerately, and car share if possible

Loop from Gilling West to River Swale (first stop). Cross river and up to Hudswell (halfway point), then back to river for railway path walk to Easby Abbey (second stop). Return via outskirts of Richmond and Aske Hall to Gilling West

General Notes
The walk is generally an easy one, with some steep ascents and descents. Total elevation 2630ft. Mixed terrain, but generally well parked paths. Plenty of history to see (an abbey, a castle, churches…and a repurposed railway station and branch line) and glorious Swaledale views and countryside. Maybe cattle in one field, and lots of sheep. Dogs allowed on lead. 2 stops (coffee shop at second one), after 6.5 and 13 miles. No public toilets at start, and only one on the route (after 8 miles, 20p). Drinks after walk in Angel Inn
