Heavy overnight rain meant that conditions underfoot were challenging with normally green fields being criss crossed by small streams trying to find their way back to the rivers. On a positive note it did mean the normally placid Leck Beck was in spate and several photographs testify to its power.

The river was followed for over 2 miles to Bullpot Farm, home of the potholing fraternity but today was probably not the best day for those considering going underground, before the long ascent of Crag Hill was undertaken. Normally you are misled by a number of false tops but not today as heavy mist had descended. After what seemed like an age we summitted to see......absolutely nothing . On to Great Coum with a similar result. A direct descent towards Dent was suddenly made all the better for some magnificent views of Dentdale and Deepdale emerging from the mist with the Howgills in the distance.

Descending via Megger Quarry to the Occupation Road, we turned towards the bulk of Whernside and lunched in full view of a delightful waterfall. On into Kingsdale with a mile or two of road walking. With very wet feet the tarmac was welcomed, by me anyway, and we only saw about 5 cars in the time we stayed on the road.

Past Yordas cave where some cavers were out in spite of the weather and up on to the Turbary Road, an old track used by peat cutters. This normally gives superb views of Ingleborough above the Whernside ridge but not today. Instead we had to console ourselves with investigating the multitude of potholes which line the path and wonder at the power of the water thundering through.

Suddenly the vista in front of us opened up and we had superb views down as far as Arnside Knott and Morecambe Bay. A couple of miles of field walking followed back to our cars, just in time for the half time football scores.
