Dorset LDWA

Please the message from Martin below:

I am writing on behalf of the Dorset LDWA committee to request your help for our next event, the Cerne Giant* 30 or 20 mile event on 22 March 2020, which was last run in 2017. See https://www.ldwa.org.uk/Dorset/W/6612/cerne-giant.html

This email is being sent in advance of the AGM in December as we need to get on. If you can spare a few hours or even the whole day to give back something to the group, that would be much appreciated.

As well as regular helpers the event still needs team leaders to be in charge of the following tasks:-

Team leaders

  • Car parking on main event. Car parking will be quite complex to organise on this event.
  • Equipment on main event - arranging to retrieve (from holders) of the equipment needed at Cerne Abbas and the other three checkpoints and packing it ready for transport to the three checkpoints.
  • Organising (and running it on the day) the marshals' event on Sunday 1 March - the support needed for this event will be much less than for the main event, no hot food

If you need any further information on any of these three roles, anyone on the committee will be happy to talk it through with you.

Helpers

Helpers are required between 6.30 am to about 9 pm on the Sunday. The different tasks include:

  • Helping at HQ at Cerne Abbas village hall – setting up, registering and checking in, assisting entrants, helping in the kitchen, serving hot and cold food and drinks, clearing up and closing down.
  • Helping at the three checkpoints at Lyscombe Chapel, Buckland Newton, and Sydling St Nicholas.  (Sydling is only on the 30 mile event). Duties include setting up, registering entrants, serving cold food and drink, clearing up.
  • Car parking supervision.
  • Marshalling at two manned clip points at Bingham’s Melcombe and near Up Cerne.
  • Sweeping all or part of both routes. Sweepers walk behind the slowest (last) entrant and have a number of duties to do with accounting for walkers and ensuring route safety amongst other things. Later on this may be in the dark. Sweepers will need to be experienced long distance walkers, and will be asked to either enter the marshals' event or recce their allocated section. Priority will be given to those who have previously done jobs other than sweeping on our events.

Marshals' event

A much smaller number of helpers are also needed for the marshals’ event (entries only for those helping on the main event) which takes place on Sunday 1 March 2020. The routes are the same as for the main event, but with less support and only one indoor checkpoint at Buckland Newton. If you are willing to organise or help on this event please let me know. If you want to enter this event please do not notify us yet, as the organiser for the marshals' event is not yet in place (see above). The same kinds of help are needed but not car parking supervision, manning clip points or sweeping. At Cerne Abbas you will be outside in the car park on this event not in the village hall.

If you want to help on either or both events, please reply to me mcallow534@gmail.com and with your preferred roles and times (if you have a preference). I am happy to answer any questions or talk it through with you on a walk.
