Dorset LDWA

Just a few details about the group walk this Sunday 24 April, which l will be leading. This walk straddles the border of Dorset and Wiltshire, with a small bit in Hampshire.

The emphasis is on archaeological matters, to take our minds away from the 100 for a bit! We will be passing through the Rushmore Estate http://www.rushmore-estate.co.uk/ which was shaped by General Pitt Rivers, one of the founding fathers of modern archaeology, as well as passing through Rotherley Down, which was excavated by him.

There will be a short visit in the middle of the afternoon to Down Farm Museum, near Sixpenny Handley. Down Farm is owned by Dr Martin Green, a farmer and archaeologist, who has made it his life's work to study and excavate the rich archaeological landscape centred around the farm. The museum includes finds from all ages but especially an extensive collection of flint tools. Martin will give a short 5 minute talk and then there will be about 15 minutes to look round the museum. This will be the afternoon stop. There are toilets available (but no refreshments!) Dogs must kept on leads on the farm.

After this we will be walking along the line of the Roman road for a while before returning to Martin Down. Please take care when driving out, as there is a blind hill on the right on the A354.

There is no pub stop, so bring plenty of food and drink. Other details in Strider.

Please do not reply directly to this email as it is from an unmonitored email account used for outgoing messages only.
