Walk Report

Twelve walkers and one dog started the Highland Coast to Coast marshals’ walk on June 14 – and 12 walkers and one dog finished! The walkers were transported to the start of the walk, at Ullapool, by the Golspie Minibus which was driven by Dave Meikle, husband of North of Scotland committee member Karen. They started walking just after 8.30m and were blessed with good weather all day – clear, which helped to offer great views, and not too hot. The forecast rain didn’t arrive until they were well into the last leg of the walk, and even then it was just drizzle. They all loved the 36 mile route, particularly some of the earlier stretches alongside Loch Achall and Loch an Daimh which are quite spectacular. The river crossing was negotiated successfully, walkers taking advantage of a rope rigged up by John Henderson and Dave Galloway. The level of the water was only 3-4 inches, so let’s hope it’s like that for the event on June 28. The walkers were well looked after at the checkpoints - at East Rhidorroch, Schoolhouse Bothy and Croik - by Roger Boston, Alison Collins and John and Dave. At the finish, Ardgay Community Hall - which had been opened especially for the marshals’ walk - Julie Cribb cooked a hot meal for them. It was a great day. Three walkers - Sandra McInnes, Shelagh Walker and Ros Wright (who bravely carried to finish on despite bad blisters) - recorded their Personal Bests in terms of mileage walked in a day, and the walkers couldn’t have had better support than they did from Roger, Alison, Dave, John and Julie. It was a great day, and I’m sure the walkers on the event will love the C2C as much as we did.
