Information for recce of the route


For those wishing to recce the route of the Valleys 100 in several stages we offer the following information. Please research your journeys via the link below. The information is valid regarding times as of 6 November 2013 and may alter, so please research before travelling. In addition, the times of buses and trains in the above advice are based on the weekday timetable. The times and frequency of buses and trains may be different at weekends. We accept no liability for changes or errors. If you discover any please notify us via the Valleys 100 forum.

There are a number of different travel options and they can be viewed by using: http://www.traveline-cymru.info/. Fundamentally though, this is probably the best breakdown.

  1. Pontypool to Maesycwmmer - 17 miles.
    Street parking near school.
    To return, buses are difficult due to multiple changes.
    Train from Hengoed (the other side of Maesycwmmer Viaduct) to Cardiff. Change to travel to Pontypool / New Inn. 15 minute walk back to West Monmouth School.

  2. Maesycwmmer to Abercynon - 19.3 miles.
    Car Park outside Maesycwmmer Checkpoint.
    To return, train from Abercynon to Pontypridd. Trains leave every 15 mins and journey takes 8 mins.
    Bus from Pontypridd Bus Station to Maesycwmmer (No 7) and it leaves at 1632 hrs with no changes.
    OR Train from Abercynon to Cardiff Queen St. Change to train to Hengoed, and walk across Maesycwmmer Viaduct back to Maesycwmmer Checkpoint.

  3. Abercynon to Tredegar - 18.4 miles.
    Car Park outside Abercynon Checkpoint.
    To return, bus from outside Lidl, Tredegar (No X4) at 1640 Hrs and travel to Pontypridd Bus Station. Change to Bus No 60A and travel to Abercynon.

  4. Tredegar to Cwmavon - 24 miles.
    Street Parking outside Georgetown Community Centre.
    To return, bus from Cwmavon (No 30) at 1635 Hrs to Brynmawr Bus Station. Change to X4 leaving Brynmawr at 1740 Hrs arriving at Tredgegar at 1810 Hrs.

  5. Cwmavon to Pontypool - 20.5 miles.
    Street parking near West Mon School, Pontypool.
    Bus (no X24) from Pontypool to Varteg. These buses leave every 10 mins and take 15 minutes.
    Varteg is above Cwmavon and is a 5 min walk away down the hill. Re-join route and walk to Pontypool.
