Walk Report
Allendale's Grand Moors. Northumbria LDWA group social walk, Saturday January 15th, 2022, led by Peter Ford. 39 walkers and Rudy the dog headed out from Allendale Town on a crisp but clear morning. The town, which is actually a village, is the capital of the two Allen Valleys, in the North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty. The stone built, early nineteenth century village is full of North Pennine character. We climbed steeply through Wentworth Park, warming up and testing our lungs and limbs until we reached the moors. At Stobb Cross a group photo was taken, and we appreciated the surrounding moors and dales. Historians are unsure about Stobb Cross, it may be the remains of a prehistoric cairn. We lunched by the Rowley Burn, where in 633 St Oswald won a famous battle against Cadwallon, leading to Oswald becoming King of Northumbria. The weather treated us to a perfect mid-January day, with far reaching views in all directions. We finished off along the banks of the East Allen Valley on the Isaac's Tea Trail long distance path. With silver and lead ore running through it's rivers, there is no doubt why Allendale means, 'valley of the shining water' Paul NellistOther Files
