Saturday 5th March
Chiltern hills, valleys and hundreds
8 Walkers 21 miles Leader Jerome Ripp
Circular from Gerrards Cross
A footpath starts from the station, soon into Bulstrode Park which is shown on maps as 'The Chiltern Hundreds' the place where retired MP's go when they have outlived their uselessness. Passing the quiet village of Hedgerley and on to the village green at Jordans, the Quaker village and home of William Penn for our first stop with one member of the group departing. North to Amersham and although the hills were only short inclines, the biting wind made it a bracing experience. Part of the walk followed the route of the 2005 LDWA Chiltern 100. Another type of 100 from the walk title. Lunch in the Memorial Gardens beside the church in Amersham Old Town, not in the adjacent Tesco, and then the valley part of the walk title with the South Bucks Way following the River Misbourne most of the way back through the Chalfonts, St Giles and St. Peter. A dull grey day but only a few spots of drizzle, plenty of mud and some rerouting due to lots of new construction work which may be HS2 linked. Overall a good day for early March.
