The Woking Wheel, Sunday 24th October 202110 walkers, 21 miles - leader Gavin Fuller
With people at both exits of the station the first challenge for the leader was getting everybody in the same place to start the walk. Once done, the group headed off to the west of the town, taking in the first sight of the day - the infamous Pizza Express branch although on this occasion there was no sign of Prince Andrew in the vicinity. After a spell along the Basingstoke Canal in its autumn finery the group then got a shock by encountering an unexpected climb up to St John's Lye. Once two members of the group had reunited an escaped dog with its owner it was through the Lye, with the added adventure of a path which crossed a stream with no handy bridge to assist.
Back to the canal for a while, the route then left the towpath and meandered through an assortment of woods, heaths, and commons, with the odd green and recreation ground thrown in, for the first few miles accompanied by the backing track of the Army expending a goodly-sounding quantity of ammunition in Bisley range. Until afternoon the sun threw a golden hue over the walk, showing it at its best. Then it was across Fairoaks Airport, just after a plane landed over the footpath, and past the headquarters of McLaren before crossing Horsell Common, famously devastated by the Martians in H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Fortunately there were no cries of "Ulla!" to alarm the group in this section, and then it was back into Woking where an assortment of sculptures were passed on the way back to the station.
