Walk Report

17 walkers, 17 miles with 803ft of ascent - leader Gavin Fuller

15 walkers joined our leader for the group's first walk from Maze Hill station. Once the newly-extended registration process was out of the way it was off to a walk through various parks and open spaces in the boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham, Bromley and Croydon.
The first park was Greenwich Park, where not for the only time in the day works were going on the park. Then across Blackheath, where we were joined by another walker, and on to Manor House Gardens and the first of several welcome toilet facilities!
Next up was Mountsfield Park, and a first view of the finishing point, and then more suburban roads taking in Forster Memorial Park to a bit of the Capital Ring to take us into Beckenham Place Park, where it was a case of dodging the runners taking part in the Southern Main Cross Country Championships. That successfully accomplished, it was through Beckenham itself to a lunch spot by the pond in Kelsey Park.
We were now blessed with some wintry sunshine, which would largely continue until the finish, as we continued through Harvington Park to reach High Broom Wood, which one member of the group had often passed and thought about going down, and now got his wish, whilst it came to a surprise to our most local resident on the walk. The stepping stones over the imaginatively-named The Beck at the end proved too terrifying for some, who sought a ford further up to cross.
One the group was back together it was past Bethlem Royal Hospital to eventually reach our first Croydon open space - Millers Pond. Then onto Shirley Heath before a lesser-walked traverse of the Addington Hills, then two final parks (Lloyd Park and Park Hill) with our leader's meander through these taking the mileage up to the promised 17 by the time we reached the end at East Croydon station, ready to reconvene there the following Saturday for more of South London...
