Walk Report
It was summer when I planned this winter walk. My thoughts were to keep it simple and be able to meet the demands of a cold icy snow laden day. The day however was warm for February and also provided us with gale force winds. There were nine of us including a new LDWA member Steve who was walking with us for the first time. We set off at 8-30am prompt. Two had afternoon commitments and were seeking a short cut, two others with slight injuries also thought a possible escape route may be needed. That was fine and well recommended for a winter walk. Usually there are double this number of walkers, but with another walk setting off from Castleton and only being a week since the last club walk, the number was nonetheless quite pleasing. The climb to Danby Beacon was without issue. The wind, possibly about 50MPH in our faces, filled the hood of my coat making it feel more like a drag parachute. Down to Danby lodge and over Ainthorpe Rigg took us to our first break, just before Stonebeck Gate Farm. From time to time the broaching wind over the top had created challenges to keep to the footpath. At Stonebeck, the four took the shorter route back, and we remaining five continued towards the Hub, an excellent place on another day for a coffee or to utilise any of its other outdoor facilities. A steep hard climb out of Fryup took us to Glaisdale Rigg. Now with the wind in our backs, it did not take too long to pass through Glaisdale where we enjoyed a second break at the seating area of the village green. The final leg through Thorneywaite and a gooey Underpark Farm soon had us back to the car park and the finish of the walk. The four who took the shorter route had obviously returned safely as their cars had gone. A good walk which went well, the wind had made its mark. I think the constant supply of fresh air all day will ensure I have no trouble sleeping soundly tonight. VinceMaps:
