Walk Report

The Gainsborough Line (Six of the Best), Saturday 16th June 2018
6 walkers, 21 miles - leader Ron Williamson
Six of the cream of London LDWA whipped up the enthusiasm to venture into the distant verdant pastures surrounding the Essex River Stour. The six highlights of our journey perhaps not surprisingly coincided with rest stops and were:
- Locating the Bures Dragon which has roamed wild since 1401.
- Wissington Church A Norman church which is half a mile from its village which in turn is on a lane not particularly on the way to anywhere.
- The Beehive Pub at Little Horkesley (coffee served in cups at £1 per cup) guess whose turn it was to buy? If you know of a cheaper place let me know and it will feature in a future walk especially if the landlady is older than 85.
- Wormingford Church A wonderful place for a quick doze in the sunshine
- Lamarsh Church with its round tower
- Great Henny Church with its troublesome bats.
With a break for lunch in comparatively busting Bures it was no surprise that we reached our destination of Sudbury some 30 minutes late, but we were now in Suffolk so no hurry, no worry.
The "gently undulating" countryside of the Essex / Suffolk borders, for some, proved to be more of a challenge than had been imagined, however, sheer determination and pure bloodymindedness ensured that all finished the course and walked the extra mile to celebrate in style at the local Wetherspoons
