Outline of Viking with path nameDanelaw Way

Lincolnshire, Rutland

96 km / 60 miles
Linking the two 'burghs' of the ancient Viking Danelaw, Lincoln and Stamford, the route passes through peaceful Lincolnshire countryside, via Ancaster and Corby Glen, then straying briefly into Rutland for a section associated with John Clare the poet. The walk was designed as five stages of between 9 and 14 miles and there are two variants: an all-weather route, adding 1.5 miles to the total distance, and a more direct route from Tolethorpe to Stamford. The route has been developed by Lincoln Ramblers Group but its originator, Brett Collier MBE, a tireless local footpaths campaigner, passed away in 2005. With this Way their wish for a linear route ending in Stamford (Lincolnshire) was achieved, as the Viking Way, which passes through Lincoln, ends in Oakham (Rutland) rather than Stamford as originally envisaged.

The guidebook was updated in 2019 and is now available as a free download from Lincoln Ramblers.
