Many, many thanks to Cumbria group for an excellent day out from Shap on Saturday 13th June. A walk of three loops (or rings) of contrasting terrain with something to please everyone – a tough route in the high level fells with lots of climbing, offering the opportunity to bag 3 Nuttalls (my favourite), a low level route through pastures, woods and villages with extra mileage to make up for the lack of ascent (a very scenic walk showing off the glories of the English countryside) and finally, a more rugged moorland and limestone scar walk with moderate ascent but which felt more and more strenuous as weariness and pain increased! For such a small group, putting on such a big event (with 7 choices of distance), organization was exceptional. CPs were staffed by a small number of cheerful marshals who manned their posts from morn till night and beyond. In other words, this was an event organized for the entrants and not the organizers, so let’s have more entrants next year.
