Was the person a LDWA member? i would have thought there is a good case for naming and shaming, umless a plausible explanation was offered up.

Much is said about Organisers ensuring the safety of walkers. Cleveland Group have had the safety of entrants at the forefront long before "risk assessments" were thought of but how about the responsibility of entrants. Yesterday on the Tandem we had a person missing for seven hours since last recording him through a checkpoint. It beggars belief how anyone with a map and compasss could take that length of time to reach somewhere in order to make contact and tell us he was miles off course but thankfully safe. The anguish this caused to the organisers, not to mention the hours checkpoint people had to stay at their posts in case he turned up was unfortunate to say the least. I would like to pay tribute to our organiser Carol, who outwardly at least, stayed calm, and our Chairman David who once again was clear-headed in an emergency.
