We all know by now that the real Y 100 Sir Fynwy has had to be postponed due to the personal safety measures put in place following the coronavirus outbreak.

So much work has gone into the planning and preparation for this event and knowing people would have been preparing last weekend for the Marshals' walk, we couldn't really let May go by without doing something to celebrate this wonderful flagship event. So, for one year only, the 100 walk will be open to all LDWA Members.

The virtual event will build on the work already done in terms of route and checkpoints and will have kit checks, registration, qualifying events (all virtual of course) but the piece de resistance will be a live real-time tracker operating throughout the weekend of the 100 linked to the actual route. Certificates will be awarded to everyone who manages any distance according to the tracker.

Everyone can get involved – walkers, marshals, sweepers, checkpoint support, timekeepers, supporters, caterers, baggage handlers – just like the real thing. Except you will all be #stayingathome!

The tracker will run independently on the internet for anyone without social media and for people wanting to log real distance over the weekend, whether doing a Colonel Tom round and round their garden, a Spanish walker doing a marathon on their 6ft balcony (!) or going up and down their stairs or jumping on their trampoline to achieve the actual ascent.

However the real fun will be on the Facebook page where checkpoints will open and close in real time, people will be asked to produce daft things as part of their kit check and where photos and comments will brighten up the whole weekend. Phoebe Smith, our President, will even be opening the event :-)

But now for a bit of serious stuff – the LDWA is going to lose a large proportion of income to the development fund with the cancellation of all of the challenge events for the foreseeable future. Therefore we would ask for a minimum £5 donation from all those who would like to take part, especially if you are going to be using the tracker, as we are working with a fellow organisation to help us make this bit happen. Enough people are already interested to make this event happen so a Facebook page and the tracker template will be set up and detailed instructions (just like a real 100) will be sent out in the next couple of weeks – to give people a chance to (virtually) qualify 😊

MAY WOULDN'T BE MAY WITHOUT THE 100 OF THE LDWA
