Here is a quick list of the 'good bits' regards how Meetup works.
Maybe they could be adopted/developed within the LDWA site - or maybe local groups could just create their own Meetup page?

Attendee benefits ..
Smartphone friendly
Saying 'I'm going' to a meetup is easy
Seeing Who's going / how many is going is easy
You can post messages on an event / communicate with other attendees ; organising lift shares for example
You get notification when someone replies your comment
You have a Diary of all meetups of the groups you are a member of, highlighting those you are attending
Organises all your meetup groups - rather than just LDWA

Organiser benefits ..
Smartphone friendly
You have a good idea of how many will attend
You can limit the number attending if you need to
When creating or altering an event - an email/notification goes out to group members

Welcome any thoughts / questions

I've noted Ramblers Groups successfully advertise walks on Meetup to boost their attendance numbers.

Maybe not actually - as there is no 'sub groups' just yet - but I love the social aspect of the site and the ease of signing up to events.

May I suggest moving the web site and functionality to Meetup.com

As keen walker and group organiser, I can see the association would benefit greatly from the format.
See http://www.meetup.com/

I am an LDWA member, and have no connection with Meetup.com whatsoever.
