Very true, Dave. It was my major concern throughout the trip.

You will be pleased to know that I remained in the town for less than 2 hours.

2000 kilometres, or 1250 miles in proper measurements, seems an awfully long way,if at the end of it you find yourself in Blackpool !

I realise that many people would not have the time to do this, but of course my suggestion is aimed at the 25% of the adult population who do not work, because of either retirement or other reasons.

And, having just done this very walk, of almost 2,000 kms, the idea of it being "a gentle stroll in the countryside" is very amusing to me.

Sounds great, but the length of the journey precludes many (people who work), and as soon as you mention "prizes", people want to go faster. Which brings in the problem of walking/running. If I have to be back at work next Monday, I'm jogging!!!

Maybe a social stroll through the countryside, over a couple of months for those with the time?

I walked from Puivert, in the Languedoc, to Blackpool in 70 days at the age of 70. Thousands of people, all over the world, were interested and followed my blog. How many of those people would be interested in following the same route themselves? In competition with others, to see how long it would take them.

I am thinking of setting this up as an event, with prizes.
