Friends of the North Highland Way Challenge

Sat 30th Apr 2022

Walk Details:

Event Details Updated
'The Friends of the North Highland Way have launched a double challenge - one in December for Spain, and the other in April 2022 on the North Highland Way. The development of the NHW is backed by the Highland Council. There is no public money involved, only the generous support that the Highland Council does in working and communicating with the founder, over the last 20 years. The promotor has been going back and forth to the village of Competa, tucked away in the Spanish Sierras Almijaras, for nearly 40 years and has walked most of the hills around the village. The GR 249 forms the basis for the Spanish challenge. The long distance paths are known as the routes of the Gran Recorrido and these GR footpaths are recognised by the Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FEDME). In this case it will start from Competa and finish in Frigiliana. The challenge is not very long, but the real challenge is the terrain. The North Highland Way will take the new route (not yet tested by GPS) along the path originally formed by an LDWA member. This is a real challenge and along geological lines as they are determined, either directly or indirectly. It is about 213km (130 miles) in nine days, with four (or five) wild camps and is a veritable mixture of terrain, whilst not all coastline, as was the original route, with much to see and experience. You will need to be a Friend of the North Highland Way to access the details, and have paid the 15 pounds. If you do both challenges, there will be a prize worth 100 pounds for the person who did them the fastest and certificates for both. If you do one you will be entered into a draw. GPS proof is required that you actually did the route. Please see www.greentourism.online for both challenges'
