Grasmere village, Lake District

From the start in Grasmere you'll soon be clambering over the rocky outcrop that makes up the iconic summit of Helm Crag. Continuing across the undulating ridge line that incorporates Gibson Knott and Calf Crag you'll then make an ascent to Greenup Edge. From there, the route features an energy sapping traverse across the boggy moorland to summit Ullscarf and High Tove, after which the course quickly descends to pick up the beautiful shoreline trail and loops around the far edge of Thirlmere, via the dam. The long, steep ascent up Sticks Pass follows, with the summits of Raise and Lower Man waiting before moving onwards to the high point of the event (and the 3rd highest summit in England), Helvellyn. From here the route skirts both Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike on a brilliant high level mountain trail before descending to loop round Grisedale Tarn and back to Grasmere via the scenic Little Tongue. With 6,500ft of vertical elevation squeezed into its 24 miles this is not for the faint-hearted, but if you undertake the challenge you'll be rewarded with ascents of some of the finest fells in the Lakes, incredible views, proper mountain trails, flowing footpaths, lots of bogs and an extremely good meal afterwards!
