Ravens, Boars and a Bell

Final ascent of Wild Boar Fell

This walk was organised by Tony WIlley as a joint venture between ourselves and the Kendal Fellwalkers.  So it was with some trepidation that I turned up; knowing these Fellwalkers to be a fit lot!  We also had a few from the Cumbria group joining us and a couple from Yorkshire too.

This 17 mile route took in Wild Boar Fell, approached via Ash Fell Edge, then a drop down to Rawthey Gill and return via two hills in the Howgills; Wandale and Green Bell.  So there were 2 x 2000 footers for those who just have to collect hills.

It was a lovely sunny days and the views across to the Lake District and North to the Pennines were superb, and some great views too down the Mallerstang Valley.

We had to huff and puff a bit to get up the long climb to Wandale, but the down and up between this and Green Bell didn't seem too bad in the end.

It was a lovely finish to arrive back in Ravenstonedale to find the beer garden of the Black Swan in full sunlight.  It would have been rude not to take advantage, so most of the 34 people on the walk settled in for half an hour's reflection.

Thanks to Tony for a great walk.
