Settle Into Spring

Stainforth Force
This was definitely a day for sun hats and shorts and suncream as spring made a real entry all of a sudden after the chilly days we have been experiencing. We set off from Austwick with a steady uphill climb onto the Limestone Pavements which lie between Maughton and Ingleton. It was perfect weather and we had a super coffee break on the limestone.

One or two of us had equipment challenges. George's trainers decided to become flip flops so that was him dispatched for a shorter route. Dave just can't take the heat so he had to get out of the kitchen and accompanied George back from Wharf. But the foolish amongst us turned left, away from home and headed off towards the Ribble valley over the hills and far far away. A couple of weeks earlier I'd been walking the Ribble Way on a chilly cloudy day and had wondered at the quiet thundering waterfalls of Stainforth. I remember saying I guess this is a great place for a paddle when it is warm. Well, today was just that day and every man and his toddler were down there in the water. I think I preferred the tranquil look!

We climbed on the far side of the valley through some beautiful woodland, only to descend again, cross the valley and climb up towards Feizor. Gill was rather marvellous just as we were all about to keel over and produced some boiled sweets. It was like being on the plane when your ears won't pop - suddenly boiled sweeties are the bees knees!

We had a real treat at Feizor, a farm managed tea shop. Well that was it for most of us - down tools and up with the tea and scones. We limped back over the last few fields as the air was cooling down, glad to see Austwick and the cars. Thanks Fred for a great day out.
Nicky on a much colder morning!
