The walk:-

Walk leader - Glenn Williams

A pleasant autumn morning saw 11 of us meet in Gargrave for a 17 mile walk led by Glenn. Unusually the ladies outnumbered the men by six to five. We were soon away (at Glenn's brisk pace) to pick up the Pennine Way heading towards Marton, where we joined tha canal tow path to pass under the impressive "Double Arched Bridge" on the A59. Continuing on the Pennine Way through Thornton in Craven, we joined the track of disused Skipton to Colne railway and turned north east towards Skipton.

Very pleasant walking on a generally elevated embankment for a couple of miles, until we reached a section in a cutting which which was completely flooded and being used for trials of 4 x 4 vehicles. This went on for about a quarter of a mile and was without doubt the wettest and muddiest footpath we had ever used (at least 10 points lost here Glenn !!!!).

Getting closer to Skipton we left the railway, crossed the Aire and by field paths came to Niffany where we had our lunch. Heading north through Stirton we had our only real climb of the day onto Sharp Haw, where the views all around were outstanding.

Here Dave managed to get separated from the remainder of the group as he stayed behind to get his picture of the Trig Point and then got chatting to a chap who had followed us up.  Following what he thought was the main path, He went north west into the woods, whilst the others went north east towards Rough Haw. We were all heading towards Flasby, but not knowing if he was in front or behind the Main group. He apparently only waited a few minutes before heading towards Gargrave arriving back only a few minutes before the rest of us.

Thanks Glenn for a very good walk, even if now you hold the record for the worst section of path we have ever walked. Also thanks to Dave for this report and to Shirley for her pictures.
