Walk from Jumbles Sept 29th

With the prospect of a good weather forecast for our walk, eight people plus John’s dog, Nellie, left Jumbles car park heading in a southerly direction following Bradshaw Brook. Crossing the main road, we made our way up through fields to the Pack Horse Inn at Affetside. The restored cross there is reputed to mark the half-way spot between London and Edinburgh but current thinking makes it a way-marker between abbeys at Lancaster and Whalley.

Preferring not to take the very overgrown path alongside the pub, Mac, our leader for today, opted for a much better way down  to the B6213 where we turned right for a couple of hundred yards before once again turning left down to 2 Brooks Valley. Here the lady of the house came out with leaflets about the Village-link walk and was surprised and pleased when we told her we had completed it a only couple of days earlier.

After descending to Hawkshaw, we walked through the village before heading right and ascending to Top of Quarlton where we had short coffee stop at the memorial stone and seat before continuing down, passing Pallet Farm, to arrive at  Turton Bottoms.  Our lunch stop was taken, again in lovely sunshine, above Wayoh reservoir which we then followed round climbing out to the Strawbury Duck PH.

Picking up on the Witton Weavers Way we followed the good track passing Turton Tower and then descending to Jumbles reservoir. Thanks to Mac Calvert for leading a good and varied 10 miles walk in lovely early autumn weather and walked at a nice sociable pace with plenty of chat and banter along the way.
