A FERRY NICE WALK

A Ferry Nice Walk - Saturday 20th. July 13

Starting from the Gummer How car park our group of 7 headed up to the fine viewpoint at the summit of Gummer How.

From there we descended and headed northwards on the east side of Windermere, past Moor How and Lindeth to the Windermere Ferry at Bowness.

Once across the Lake, we followed the west shore southwards, through High Cunsey and after a lakeside lunch stop continued on our way, keeping as close to the lake as public footpaths would allow. It was a very hot day and at times it was a relief to be walking through shaded woodland. It came, therefore, as a shock to the system when we headed away from the lake and began the steep climb that took us onto Scott Park Heights.

Deep bracken hindered our progress as we descended from the summit to a path that led us to the road near Finsthwaite. From there a pleasant field path, then woodland took us to Lakeside, where we took the small passenger ferry across the lake to Fell Foot.

Now for the sting in the tail. After a short break we had a kilometre or so of relentless ascent, in very hot humid conditions, to our cars at Gummer How.

The distance was around 18 miles. Thanks Jeff for the walk, but please demand cooler conditions in future.
