Event Details

The Winter Tanners is a challenge walk (or run) of circa 30 miles (or 20 miles) on Surrey footpaths and bridleways with MINIMAL support in weather conditions which may be adverse. Only strong and self-reliant walkers and runners should enter. The event normally takes place on the third Sunday in January and, being a winter event, can be subject to the vagaries of winter weather. It does not follow a marked route. It is a cross country event in which you need to follow a detailed route description and you might well need map-reading skills if you go off route.

The organisers seek to minimise the ongoing risks from Covid 19.  You must not attend if you or a close contact has recently been diagnosed with or show any Covid-19 symptoms.  Common sense should be used with antibacterial sanitizer carried and used as appropriate.  Please avoid prolonged crowding with other entrants.

Timing

Registration will open at 0700.  The start will be 0730 to 0930 but fast walkers must start after 0800 and runners after 0830. All to finish by 1900

Location and Parking

This years event will again use our venue close to Leatherhead town centre (TQ160564, KT22 7BA), with car-parking for the start/finish.

You must wear footwear & clothing suitable for a winter cross country event, including extra layer(s) in case of need.  You are required to carry appropriate maps (see below), a mobile phone, a compass, whistle & headtorch if likely to finish after 1630.  The full requirements appear in the conditions of entry

The electronic map coverage you will need can be seen here.  The paper maps required are either 1:50 000 Landranger 187 ( Dorking, Reigate & Crawley OR 1:25 000 Explorer 146 (Dorking, Box Hill & Reigate]

Routes

New each year the route is devised by John Westcott and Mary Dee; the 2023 routes are approximately 30 and 20 miles.

Entrant Information, the route descriptions  and GPX files* are now available.  Please download either the 20 mile route description or the 30 mile route description.   We shall tell you on the day if the flood route needs to be used.  For the gpx files please download the flood route gpx as well as either the 20 mile gpx or the 30 mile gpx .  We shall tell you on the day whether or not the flood route is needed.  (Required mapping shown above under ‘Requirements’.)

Please ensure that you print off a copy of the route description before coming to the event as copies will not be available at the start.

*GPX files are provided as support only. The definitive descriptor of the routes remains the written Route Description. Please note the gpx defines the route in a CLOCKWISE direction.

Start and finish

Limited indoor use will be made available at the start/finish with entrants at the start only using the ground floor reception and toilets.  At the finish though a take away hot drink/snack will be available.

Checkpoints

There will be 2 checkpoints on the '20 mile route' & 3 on the '30 mile route'. Use the sanitizer provided.  Please bring your own mug and place it before the marshals for filling.

Note that if you arrive at a checkpoint before its scheduled opening time you will need to wait so that your arrival time can be recorded.  It is your responsibility to leave at a sensible time given your expected pace and distance to be covered. Entrants who miss checkpoints will be disqualified - we need to keep tabs on entrants and so missing/skipping checkpoints is strongly discouraged.  If you arrive at a checkpoint after the closing time you may be timed out.

There is little parking space at the CPs and supporters should not park there.  Supporters and friends can follow the progress Public Results by selecting 'follow participants' (this could be bookmarked on a smartphone for supporters)
