London LDWA

Well, welcome to Monday!

And what a momentous Monday it is.   With Big Ben switching off (probably) at lunchtime today, and a partial solar eclipse (albeit a rather unspectacular one) this evening to emphasise the sense of occasion, it truly promises to be a week to remember.

So although LDWA London always has an exciting walk programme on offer, fittingly given today's auspicious start, this week's seems to be especially interesting.   All the details are below, so read on!

First of all, on Wednesday evening, Paul will be encouraging us to "walk the line".   This rather mysterious zero-degree outing links up a series of artistic installations in the Greenwich - to Stratford area.   There's even a cable-car ride and (amazingly) a Wetherspoons thrown in!!   So this is a walk that you can't possibly want to miss - in which case, to join the full walk, meet at North Greenwich tube at 16.30 or just to do the second stretch, be at Royal Victoria DLR at 18.30 on Wednedsay.

Then on Saturday, we are being encouraged by Dave, in true Buzz Lightyear-ish fashion, to travel to the Sevenoaks Weald and Beyond!   So discover what life is like at the end of the universe (well Tonbridge), and to explore the delights of Penshurst castle and much, much, more along the way, just get to Sevenoaks station for 09.45 on Saturday.   Wow!

Now, before I sign off, here's a question for the horticulturalists among you.

On last Thursday's evening walk, we encountered a fine stand of trees decorating a roadside in Chelsea.   These anonymous aborous architectural adornments were laden with the bizarre spiky fruit pictured below which nobody on the walk was able to identify.

So - the question which is so simple to pose, but possibly so hard to answer is - what are they?

Sadly, no prizes are on offer this week, but I will try and publish the identity of the fruit in next week's Update

Peculia Fruit!

Collected from a roadside tree in Chelsea on Gail's evening walk last Thursday
But what is this fabulous fruit?

That's all for now.   Have a great week and don't forget the Ray-Bans if gazing skywards at around half past seven on Monday evening!
