NOTICES

1: New Members:

Welcome to the following associate members: Annie Beraquit, Graham Melrose and Rum Thomas

2: Capital Challenge Marshals

Five weeks after it opened, this event is already nearly full, which is a trstament to its popularity. We therefore need people to act as marshals for the event. Anybody intereded please contact Marie Heracleous, either by email (mheracleousd@yahoo.co.uk) or text/WhatsApp her on 07787532793. Being a marshal means you can go on the Marshals' Walk, which gives you a chance to do the route, albeit as a group walk rather than under cghallenge conditions. But if you complete the Marshals Walk you are considered to have done the event.

3: Speyside 100 Marshals

Here’s an opportunity to experience the wonderful scenery and walking in Scotland next year. You may know that the annual LDWA 100-mile event (the Speyside 100) is taking place there, based at Boat of Garten, near Aviemore. London Group has agreed to take on Checkpoint 7 (at 49 miles) at Recletich near Dufftown, so we need volunteers to join our team. This checkpoint is in a barn, but we’re assured it has toilets! The operating times are 6 pm on Saturday 24 May to 11 a.m on Sunday 25 May, working in shifts.  So you would make your own arrangements to travel to and around Scotland to fit in with these times.  Transport from Aviemore or Boat of Garten to Checkpoint 7 and back will be provided, or you can travel direct to and from Dufftown if preferred.  We have also offered to help at HQ in Boat of Garten after our checkpoint closes, but this is optional! If interested, please contact Colin Saunders, cswriter@btinternet.com.

Forthcoming Walks

The City at Night

Tue 12th Dec 2023

Distance
6ml.
Start Time
18:00
Route
Meet at Liverpool Street Station (by information boards near platform 10)

Wrap up warm & join us on a knee friendly stroll through the City visiting familiar locations to be seen in a new light. We will finish by 20:30 at Liverpool St, or nearest tube station if running late

General Notes
To enjoy this walk a dry evening is required. A last-minute cancellation is a possibility but whatever the weather the leader will be at the start at the appointed time. All are invited to a pre-walk all-weather get together in the Crosse Keys any time after 16:30 (look for us in the small rooms at the rear of the bar). Just turn up on the day but prior notice, by email, of your intention to come would be appreciated by the leader

And then I'm trying something slightly more experimental at the weekend

Midwinter on Thames

Sat 16th Dec 2023

Distance
?ml.
Start Time
08.00
Route
Meet at Tower Hill station

This walk will commence by crossing Tower Bridge & then proceed upstream along the Thames crossing every pedestrian bridge over the river en route (nb I'm only counting the Golden Jubilee Bridges once because the route works better that way). Starting at sunrise, it will end at the first convenient station reached once the sun sets at 15.52. How many bridges can we cross in that time?
If sunrise is too early people are welcome to join en route  & there's also plenty of scope to depart if anybody's had enough bridges for one day!
