Social  walks

A quick reminder that there’s just one more social  walk in June, plus another one in early July. For information on walks further ahead see Future Walks. And can you help us fill some  gaps in our  social walk programme? Find the free dates here - Available Walk Dates

Saturday 29th June:  The Northern Line Down to  Bank, 17.5 miles, 9am, High Barnet Underground Station, Barnet Hill, Barnet, Herts, EN5 5RP (w3w//flat.asleep.glass) Leader: Peter Tremain  07427 857003

Travelling to  the start by Tube: Meet at Liverpool St. Station at 8am outside Camden Food (opposite platforms 11 & 12) for the 5 minute walk to Moorgate Station and then the  Northern Line (38 minutes) to High Barnet.
The Finish:  Bank Station for the  Northern Line back to High Barnet, or a short  walk to Liverpool Street Station. There is also an option to  finish after 12.5 miles at Camden Town Station (Northern  line). No dogs.

Here are a  few pictures from the walk and a poetic synopsis  to  whet  your appetite: Photos

From Barnet high, through park to wood,
And on, by Finchley, where Spike sits, and stood.
Perhaps a coffee, at Inky’s ground?
Before, arts and crafts appear, and abound.

An artist, a Bond villain, a poet, and a preacher,
In Hampstead’s lanes and passages do feature.
Then down to lunch, with much to choose,
Towpath at Camden! will try not to lose.

Regents Canal, Copenhagen Street,
and Shepherdess walk, could be hard on the feet!
Now down from the rim, among towers high,
In a field of dissenters, Defoe, Bunyan, and Blake, do lie.

From a squalor’s market to a double Banksy,
But all this maybe a flight of fancy.
So, as to being perfectly frank!
We may not have strictly followed the Northern Line down to the Bank

Sunday 7th July:  A Walk to Danbury. 19 miles. 9am,  Galleywood Common car park  (South),  CM2 8JU,  LR 167, GR TL704 022  Leaders: Gill & Rob Struthers 01245 250473 or 07946 539972

A circular walk from Galleywood to Danbury & back with a morning stop on the canal at Sandon Mill Lock & then onwards to Danbury where we will stop to use the facilities before a short walk to The Cricketers Public House on the common for lunch. There are a few benches on the common opposite the pub for packed lunches. In the afternoon we return to Galleywood via East & West Hanningfield. Sorry no dogs.

 Flower of Suffolk 100

We have received the following message  from Katie Hunt, Chair of the organising committee for the Flower of Suffolk 100 next May:

Hello friends in Essex and Herts. Many of you will know that the Hundred event is coming to East Anglia for the first time in 2025. Many of you have already offered to help on the Essex and Herts checkpoint* on the Flower of Suffolk Hundred. The reason for my post is to ask if any of you would be willing to work on any of our Checkpoints on the Marshals' Event. It would be great to hear from you if you can offer any help. Just email me on fos100chair@btinternet.com.

*The Essex and Herts checkpoint on the main event will be approximately half way  round the route at Knodishall.

The Flower of Suffolk website is now live: 2025 Hundred LDWA - Flower of Suffolk Hundred

At our AGM earlier this year, we agreed to  make a donation to  the Finish Line Fund who have kindly provided us with  a portable defibrillator for use on our events. We have now received this nice thank you note  from them:

Thank you so much for your recent kind donation on behalf of Essex & Herts Long Distance Walking Association. Your support for the charity is greatly appreciated and has helped us over the past year, to be able to make grants to 32 local sports clubs and event organisers for defibrillators, medical cover, training courses, equipment, and general sponsorship.

Finish Line Fund has now made 110 grants totalling c£72,000 and our defibrillator estate is 33.

Your donation will help us to continue our work in East Essex with other clubs.

Thank you again.

If you want to support the Charity further, please get in contact chair@finishlinfund.org
