April 2024
Welcome to your April update!
I'd like to start by thanking all my fellow walkers, and our organiser Lizzie in particular, for a wonderful weekend based in Brecon. We had five great walks led for us by Lizzie and Peter on Friday, Sunday and Monday, and on Saturday David and Jason from South Wales LDWA led us on walks from Crickhowell. The two Saturday walks crossed paths on the slopes above Crickhowell with a fantastic photo opportunity of LDWA members from Essex & Herts, BBN, South Wales, Dorset and the Isle of Wight: Group photo
This is just one of the many, many photos taken over the weekend and shared on WhatsApp or Facebook - I'm (slowly) adding a selection of them to our website. Hopefully there will be more to see over the next couple of days: Away Weekend Walks
We barely had time to get home and put our first loads of washing on before Lizzie was sorting out the details of next year's Away Weekend:
Tour: Exmoor, Selworthy, staying at HF Holnicote House Date: 28th- 31st March 2025. With two lovely Away Weekend completed, I have news of our next adventure, to pastures new. We have a provisional booking for 32 people at Hf Holnicote House, Selworthy, Exmoor, Friday 28th – Monday 31st March 2025 10am, for 3 nights, self-guided. This includes bed, breakfast, dinner and packed lunches Saturday and Sunday, with bedrooms in both Holnicote House and The Annex. https://www.hfholidays.co.uk/country-houses/locations/selworthy-exmoor Including our free place allocation and walking group discount, the approx. cost is £260 - £275.00 per person. (Price is depends on final booking numbers). There are a limited number of single rooms available, so if you are willing to share a twin room, please let me know when booking your place. Non-walking partners are most welcome. We have been allocated a range of room types for 2 people, so please let me know your preference for two single beds or one double bed, as this information is required on the booking form. I will plan for four walks; an afternoon walk on the Friday, full day walks on Saturday and Sunday, with a shorter walk on Monday. This weekend is when British Summertime beings, so we gain an hour of daylight but lose an hour's sleep! If you would like to book a place on this group away weekend, please email me asap. The non-refundable deposit of £50.00 will need to be with me by Thursday 25th April 2024. (My bank details are the same as last time, if you are new to our Away Weekend - then I will send you details of how to pay the required deposit). Deposits to HF are non-refundable but if a replacement person is found, then I would be in a position to do so. The balance will then be due on 10/02/2025. Looking forward to hearing from you, Lizzie Bridge, E&H Walks Secretary essexandherts.walks@ldwa.org.uk

SATURDAY 20th April: More Moore. 18 miles. 9am, Harlow Town Station.
By train: 0825 train from Liverpool Street, 0837 from Tottenham Hale, 0847 from Bishop's Stortford By car: postcode is CM20 2JD. The station car park costs £6.80 but there are cheaper alternatives nearby such as the Showground car park on Fifth Avenue CM20 1FD which costs £1.25.
We're heading off to Perry Green, home of the Henry Moore studio and gardens, or more correctly to the public rights of way that take us past some of the great sculptor's most monumental works. (It's £18 for an annual pass to go in - well worth it if you're at all local).
We'll set off by the River Stort to Roydon before heading north through Hertfordshire and the pretty valley of the River Ash. Perry Green is about half way, but for lunch we'll continue another mile to Green Tye which has a pub (Prince of Wales) and a village green. Returning, we'll pass through unspoilt countryside earmarked as a 'garden town' northern extension of Harlow - catch it before it's unspoilt no longer!
Please bring your own food. There is no shop en route and the pub doesn't serve food, but its website states "you are very welcome to bring your own"
Sunday 23rd June: Herts Hobble: new routes from Baldock: SiEntries - Herts Hobble 2024
Happy walking everyone,
