Mid March update

Hi All,

Welcome to  your mid-March update which includes an introduction from our new Chair Kirsteen, details of our next social walks (including one tomorrow), an opportunity  for you to  join the team planning our 50th Anniversary celebrations and a link to  a really useful training guide.

Hi,

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have joined the Essex and Herts LDWA committee as Chair and am really looking forward to working with everyone to continue all of the great work that has gone before to make this group so successful.
My first LDWA event was the Malvern Midsummer Marathon and from that day I was hooked! The generous support at each of the checkpoints and general comradery was truly overwhelming and I enjoyed every minute.
My background is in education and I have loved teaching primary-aged children and serving as a headteacher at our local school. I will be hanging up my teaching boots and swapping them for walking boots in September and so will have more time and energy to help the Essex and Herts group continue to grow from strength to strength.
I will be taking part in the Essex Walker and hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you at that event.
If you would like to drop me a line to say ‘hi’ and let me know what you love about your Essex and Herts group or any ideas you may have for the future then I can be contacted at essexandherts.chair@ldwa.org.uk
All the best

Kirsteen

Essex and Herts 50th Anniversary 2025

Exciting times for Essex and Herts! 2025 will be our 50th anniversary and we already have lots of ideas for walks and events to help make it a very special year. We are now looking for a team of members to  help  with  the planning and organisation of these events. No special  skills are needed,  just  lots of enthusiasm and a love of walking and Essex & Herts LDWA!  If you would like to  be involved with  'Team 2025',  just  get  in touch  with Kirsteen at essexandherts.chair@ldwa.org.uk. An initial online meeting  has been arranged on Friday 19th April at 11am.

Social walks and Challenge events

Sunday 17th March:  Magna Carta Walk. 17 miles 9am, Castle Hedingham. Park in Bayley St. opposite the castle  (CO9 3DG) Leader: Mike Wheatley : 07455 124631 mikewheatley3@yahoo.com

Two castles, eight  miles and  809 years of history! The Magna Carta Walk is 17 miles long between Castle Hedingham & Clare and then  back to Castle Hedingham. It retraces the route that would have been taken by messengers of two of the principal rebels in the lead up to the revolt. Lunch stop in Clare; picnic lunch in Clare Country Park recommended, but Clare also has a small cafe, a Co-op & pubs. Like the medieval messengers, we'll do the Magna Carta Walk both ways in a day. This is a flat walk,  with two  stiles and a mix of good cinder track and  footpaths. Dogs welcome.

Friday 29th March: Good Friday Walk with Eddie and Linda. 16 miles. 9am,   Victoria Road car park Rayleigh,SS6 8EL

Leader: Linda Fordham Tel: 07773 122276 linfordham@googlemail.com

Sunday 7th April:  Across the Border. 20 miles. 9am, Bulmer Village Hall, Church Road, Bulmer, Sudbury  CO10 7EH Leader: Jean Bowers 07732 902218/ 01787 460181 jeanbill.walking@btinternet.com

We will be walking through the Villages of Belchamp Walter, Foxearth, Glemsford to Long Melford for lunch, and  returning via Liston, Borley & the outskirts of Sudbury back to Bulmer. Please contact  Jean in advance if you wish to  bring your dog.

Sunday 14th April: Essex Walker; - 27 or 17 mile Challenge event:  Essex & Herts LDWA - Essex Walker 2024

How to  save a life!

Essex and Herts now have a portable defibrillator donated by the Finish Line Fund . This  excellent short training video from the British Heart Foundations  guides you through  what  to  do  if someone is in cardiac arrest and when and how to  use a defibrillator:
