Social Walks

At the moment we have two social walks arranged in September - an outing across the Thames to Kent and an Essex  Parish Boundary Walk, plus the Blackwater Marathon Marshals’ Walk on Sunday 17 th September.

Any additional  walks or updates to these planned walks will appear in our Future Walks List.

If you're thinking about leading a walk, check out the dates that are still available here: Essex & Herts LDWA - Available Walks Dates 2023

Food hygiene and  Food Allergies

I've  recently had a couple of conversations around  the 'do's and don'ts ' of serving food and drink at checkpoints. There are a couple of useful documents on catering in the LDWA Toolkit:

Food safety and checkpoint hygiene

Suggested Good Practice

In addition, there are two  short online courses recommended by the LDWA for marshals on checkpoints on challenge walks:

Food Hygiene Certificate - Level 1 Course | The Safer Food Group This course, consisting of a series of videos followed by  a few very straightforward questions, lasts about an hour and costs £14.40 (£12 + VAT) - you can claim this back from our Treasurer, Elaine (

Food Standards Agency food allergy online training This course  will take a bit longer, but it doesn't cost anything and there doesn't seem to be a time limit for completing it.
