Essex Way Relay

To mark the 50th anniversary celebrations of both the LDWA and The Essex Way, Essex and Herts will be walking the full route as  a relay over the weekend of Saturday 2nd - Sunday 3rd July.  The first group will start at Epping carrying a banner which  will be passed on to the  group walking the next leg, with the banner eventually arriving at Harwich.

Update -  15th June
It’s now less than three weeks until we celebrate the joint 50th birthdays of the LDWA and the Essex Way and there has been a surge of interest from people wanting to walk part or all of the 82 mile route from Epping to Harwich. Billed as an extended led social walk divided into 5 stages of varying length, we aim to do both the LDWA and Essex Way proud, with a celebration at the end in Harwich. There is still time to join us and all the details can be found here  Essex Way & LDWA 50th Anniversary Relay or by emailing Peter Tremain at -
So that we can put our final plans into place and email out the joining instructions to participants , we ask that anyone wanting to take part lets Peter know by Monday 27th June. Shortly after that date and once the organising committee have finalised logistics, we will email out full details. Whilst this is a mainly ‘self supporting’ walk it is envisaged that modest support, light refreshments and movement of a small kit/ provisions bag should be possible for those attempting the whole route - or most of it! We ask for your patience while we work on these final details.
Most of all, we hope that as many of you as possible are able to come along to join us. It’s not a challenge event and it certainly isn’t a race - and the length of the legs have been carefully orchestrated to appeal to a range of walking abilities. We look forward to seeing you in Epping or Harwich or somewhere in between!

There is a choice of five social walks (self-supporting and walking together) ranging from 5 miles to 21 miles. Saturday has an early morning walk, an afternoon walk with option of making it an 18-mile day walk, and an evening walk. Starting at 11.30pm we have the first night-time social walk of the year, and Sunday morning the finale, a superb walk from Dedham to Harwich with options of joining the walk along the way using the Manningtree to Harwich Mayflower Line. All that in one weekend!

You do not have to walk; you can just meet us by the Lighthouse in Harwich on Sunday afternoon (bring a picnic).

Although the walks are linear, as well as the Mayflower Line, there is also a bus service between Harwich and Dedham on Sundays, and a bus from Coggeshall to Chelmsford every 30 minutes on Saturday with a stop a ¼ mile from the start of the walk at Little Leighs. We also aim to have at least one car at the end of each leg.
