Permutational Ecclesiastic Perambulation

PERMUTATIONAL ECCLESIASTIC PERAMBULATION (otherwise known as a PEP WALK - recommended to boost morale)

(NOT to be confused with the historic DARTMOOR PERAMBULATION)

AN ANYTIME CHALLENGING WALK

proposed as a PILOT to run over FOUR months:   January - April 2021;

WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?

IT'S A WALK OPPORTUNITY WHICH:

  • May be undertaken individually or in groups OF UP TO SIX - depending upon then current imposed advice/restrictions;
  • Is flexible in terms of places to start and distances to walk;
  • Is self-supporting - there is no designated base or marshalling;
  • May be undertaken on days and times to suit walkers (within a given date period);
  • Requires a crucial of element of planning and map reading skills (given the absence of route descriptions);
  • Requires some proof of having visited SPECIFIED LOCATONS with clues to be solved AT OR CLOSE TO (Anglican) CHURCHES
  • Brings members together through an ONLINE FORUM on which may be recorded walkers' records, together with any observations they may wish to make;
  • Provides the option of an award of a downloadable certificate on completion!

IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THIS FORM OF EVENT IS NOT PRESENTED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE NORMAL SOCIAL AND CHALLENGE WALKS WHICH THE LDWA PROMOTES.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • FOUR SPECIFIC LOCATIONS (SLs) are given (A, B, C, D) - each where parking is possible;
  • The location of the SLs is determined such that there is a range of distances and terrains (footpaths, open moorland, tracks, minor roads) to cover between them;
  • Walkers decide at which ONE of the 4 SLs they wish to start (AND finish);
  • Walkers also decide which (i.e. HOW MANY) of the other SLs they wish to visit:
  • (1, 2, or 3) AND in which order;   [Theoretically this gives the option of 60 different walks!]
  • The walk is "managed" by an online coordinating PANEL (the two event promoters) which is advised, on entry, as to who wishes to walk, their intended route (e.g. BCAB), and provides the clues to the intended SLs to be visited - SEE BELOW FOR FULL DETAILS;
  • Walkers decide exactly when (i.e. on what day) they wish to walk - within the four month period;
  • On completion walkers advise the PANEL of the actual date of the walk, the SLs that they started at and visited, the numeric answers to the SL clues and the overall time taken;
  • An online, downloadable certificate will be made available;
  • Walkers will be afforded the opportunity, if not encouraged, to comment online on their experiences, together with a personal a personal evaluation of this event, for the benefit of sharing with the promoters and other walkers/members;
  • Walkers are not restricted to one walk only!
  • TO COMPLY WITH LDWA INSURANCE ARRANGEMENTS ALL WALKERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN (ELECTRONICALLY) A WAIVER DOCUMENT (see under HOW DO I ENTER - below).

WHAT ABOUT THE CLUES AT THE SPECIFIC LOCATIONS?

  • The CLUES (to be answered) are located at or very close to the (Anglican) CHURCHES at the SLs (and, as noted above, each requires only a SINGLE DIGIT answer);
  • The CLUES will be given to entrants when they register;
  • The SPECIFIC LOCATIONS are the villages:
  1. Chagford (SX701875)
  2. Manaton (SX749812)
  3. Lustleigh (SX785813)
  4. Widecombe (SX718767)

NOTE: there will be a DIFFERENT SET OF CLUES for each of the FOUR months that the event runs.

Measured approx.distances BETWEEN SPECIFIC LOCATIONS are provided here ONLY AS A GUIDE given the alternative routes that walkers may take: the challenge lies in the satisfaction of the self navigation of a chosen route:

  1. Chagford - Manaton 9.9km  (6.2 miles)
  2. Chagford - Lustleigh 11.8km  (7.4 miles)
  3. Chagford - Widecombe 13.8km  )8.6 miles)
  4. Manaton - Lustleigh 4.2km (2.6 miles)
  5. Manaton - Widecombe 6.6km  (4.1 miles)
  6. Lustleigh - Widecombe 10.1km  (6.3 miles)

The configuration of the SLs allows for walks from (roughly) 5.2 miles to around 25 miles

WHAT ELSE?

  • Initially entries are restricted to LDWA members only for whom there is NO ENTRY FEE;
  • On the basis of feedback the walking event will be continued, adapted or scrapped;
  • WALKERS WILL BE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES TO ABIDE BY THE RELEVANT COUNTRY CODES. ANY INFRINGEMENT COULD BRING THE LDWA INTO DISREPUTE.
