All The Way To America

SATURDAY 16/3/2019

The weather forecast was good for Gordons walk from Scaling Dam. With a reasonable turn out of 12, we set off along little know paths (well most people didn't know them!).  In under a mile we descended down a deep ravine and climbed out the other side.  Passing Grinkle Park Hotel on the road we  soon turned off to go down another deep ravine, which was actually the same one but further on.  There was a cool breeze in the air with crystal clear skies, the paths were good and some a little muddy in places.  On arriving at Roxby we enjoyed a pleasant sea view and saw Boulby Mines in the distance. We eventually arrived at America House, all the while climbing steadily uphill.  After leaving America House, we arrived at the highest point of the walk, where we started the long descent to Ugthorpe Lodge Hotel on the Whitby Moor Road.  The next stage wasn't too far away at Greenhouses andHi at this point Dave didn't have a clue where he was.  We returned by a good track via Tranmire bordering the open moor.  A lot of the paths were new to some of the seasoned hikers that have walked this area previously. It was then back along a farm track to join Scaling Dam, with Gordon and Julie stopping for a quick cuppa at the refreshment cabin, leaving the remainder of the walkers to return to their vehicles.  A pleasant walk of 14.5 miles with approx. 2000ft assent.
