Circumnavigate the Globe, Clockwise - Saturday 24th June 2023

A few weeks ago I led the group walk “Circumnavigate the Globe - anticlockwise” which was pretty challenging due to the overgrown nature of some sections of the route. Yesterday we did the “clockwise” route which also included Mentmore and Slapton villages and added another 5 miles to the walk. I’m not sure if it was due to the high forecast temperature or whether people remained traumatised from the first walk, but only 3 of us were brave enough to give it another go.

The weather at the start wasn’t too hot and we had cloudy skies which made for a very pleasant beginning. We stopped for a break at Stewkley and had lunch at the same place as last time, near the wallabies and rheas. By now the sun was out and it was getting very warm. We continued up to Mentmore where people dressed in their finery were arriving for a wedding. They had wonderful weather and I suspect that the gentlemen would be getting rather hot in their suits.

We arrived back at the Globe around 5pm for much needed refreshments. It was a tough walk, not only because of the heat but as many will testify from the first walk, as well as the nettles, thistles and brambles, the long grass and uneven surface underfoot in a number of places, really saps the energy.

Many thanks to Nick and Abi for sticking with it to the end.
