LDWA March Virtual Challenge

Monday 1st March - Welcome

Welcome to North West Grampian, the local LDWA group that serves the north of Scotland and the Isles. Yes, we have members in Shetland and the Western Isles as well as scattered from the west coast to Aberdeenshire and from John o’ Groats to the southern Cairngorms.

This far-flung corner of the country offers so much in the way of walking in areas steeped in whisky and wildlife, history and culture, geology, landscape and sport. During the month we hope to take you on a journey through our region and also highlight some of our classic walks which you may wish to follow one day. We have tried to reflect this variety on our group’s logo.

As well as our social walks, which we try to make as varied as possible during the year on every 4th weekend in the month, we also have an arrangement with the Moray Mountaineering Club which allows our members to join in with their Bus Meets during the summer. This enables us to do interesting and classic point-to-point walks such as the Lairig Ghru through the Cairngorms.

We have two challenge walks on our calendar. On the weekend nearest to the longest day we introduced the Heldon Hill 25-mile Challenge Walk and Midnight Sun BBQ. This walk starts in Elgin and goes over the hills via Califer Hill viewpoint, finishing on the beach at Findhorn where we have a BBQ ready. It is timed so that everyone finishes by midnight but we get to see the sun setting over the Bay before almost instantly rising again!

Our other challenge event is the Laich o’ Moray 50 mile walk which takes place in October. This is also a qualifier for the LDWA flagship 100 mile event.

We also held a walking weekend in the Torridon mountains on the rugged west coast which was very successful and we look forward to being able to do something similar again in the not too distant future.

But – enough about us just now. During the month we will bring you more information about all aspects of this beautiful area. For now though please make sure you have signed up to the Showcasing the North of Scotland Spreadsheet so you are ready for action.
No need to go out daily if you can’t – just record any mileage on the days you do. Also, no maximum mileage for those speedy peeps out there.
